SCOLIOSIS

Scoliosis rehabilitation is a great classic in rehabilitation practices.

Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine associated with rotation of the vertebral bodies.

Scoliosis can be true, meaning that the lateral deviation is accompanied by a bony deformation that can be objectively (measurable) in radiology.

Scoliosis is said to be attitudinal when no radiological sign is detected (no radiological abnormality).

Scoliosis is then reducible by the correct positioning of the subject.

Scoliosis can have varying degrees of severity. The most serious forms must sometimes be corrected by wearing orthopedic corsets or orthopedic surgery.

SCOLIOSIS REHABILITATION

Attitudinal scoliosis and mild true scoliosis (less than 25° of deviation) follow the same rehabilitation plan.

It is then a question of re-educating the posture by working with the help of a mirror.

Massage of contracted muscles and breathing exercises are generally often used and very useful.

The relaxation of the entire back muscle chain is also fundamental.

Medium scoliosis (deviation between 25 and 50°) is the form that must be corrected by wearing a corset. Rehabilitation continues 2 to 3 times/week during the period of wearing the corset.

During the sessions, the physiotherapist removes the corset for the needs of his sessions and replaces it at the end of the session.

Self-enlargement and postural re-education exercises are important, as are stretching and massages.

The latter are very popular because the corset limits movement and the muscles are often rigid.

Massages are also important for the child's body structure.

We will also work on the positioning of the pelvis (round back exercises, hollow back exercises). Once the corset is permanently removed, the sessions intensify and become more dynamic. Learning the corrected position is also fundamental.

Severe forms of scoliosis (more than 50°) can be corrected surgically.

Post-operatively, the child comes out with a temporary cast or corset which will later be replaced by a permanent corset which the child will keep for approximately 6 to 12 months. During this period the child will also be re-educated by the physiotherapist.

It is important that the child or adolescent understands that he is the primary rehabilitator for his back, so he must be vigilant at all times (his family as well). We will pay attention to the weight and shape of the school bag for children of school age.
