CLUBFOOT
Clubfoot is an orthopaedic deformity often detected at birth (sometimes even in utero).
It occurs in 0.2% of births (1 in 800) and is the cause of 0.6% of hospital admissions for children under one year of age.
The deformity combines an equinus and varus movement of the hindfoot and adduction of the subtalar and medial tarsal joints.
Patients thus give the impression of walking on the outer edge of their feet.
The deformity may be more or less pronounced and will determine the intensity, earliness and duration of physiotherapy treatment.
Treatment generally begins at birth. It consists of corrective mobilisation. This correction can also be considered for adults who were not treated during childhood.
At the end of the sessions, the physiotherapist uses corrective restraints to maintain the correction until the next session.
These treatments are essential and give very good results, avoiding handicaps and problems in learning to walk.
